Junior College 1 – 2

The culmination of the secondary school curriculum is the Junior College (JC) programme – a two-year, intensive educational experience that prepares students for university education. The first year of JC culminates in students sitting for the Cambridge AS level examinations. The journey continues in the second year with the taking of the Cambridge A-level examinations.

At the JC level, students will narrow down their fields of studies to just four subjects which prepares them for further specialisation at university.

JC Curriculum Overview

Similar to secondary level, core and non-core subjects are available for selection at the JC level. Many of the subjects build on prerequisite skills and content knowledge from IGCSE.

English

English is the primary language for all classes and instruction at Anglo Singapore International School (except for other language courses, naturally).  Our focus on teaching English, specifically reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills, forms the foundation of our instruction. We believe all our students need English at the first  language level, and thus it forms the cornerstone of student success in our international community of students and teachers.

One of the most important language offerings at Anglo Singapore International School is Chinese (Mandarin). China looms large in our region, and has a growing importance on the world stage. Naturally, we believe that teaching our students to be fluent in Chinese sets them up for greater opportunities for potential success in the future. Not to mention, it’s a matter of practicality – some 15% of the total population on the planet speak Chinese.

Like most of our other language programmes, Chinese language educators at Anglo are native speakers who employ both their knowledge of the language as well as their knowledge of Chinese culture, heritage, history, and tradition, in order to engage the students fully in their language learning.

As the school is based in Thailand, and in accordance with government regulations, all students at Anglo are given Thai language instruction as part of the curriculum. Learning Thai helps students to better fit into the local community, and be able to navigate, converse, and absorb information more fully. Like in our other language programmes, the grammar, syntax, and vocabulary of the Thai language are coupled with cultural learning as well. Non-Thai students are given a basic course in Thai language and culture, to become proficient in the language, without the kind of expertise that native Thai students require.

Mathematics and Science

Our maths and science curricula encourages students to view these disciplines as meaningful and useful in daily life, as well as being rewarding in terms of the critical thinking skills and knowledge imparted. A background in maths and science are increasingly important as the world becomes more and more technologically and digitally reliant. Maths and science instruction at Anglo goes well beyond just providing the basic information, facts, and concepts. Our students engage in science experiments and investigations of their own, using our top-notch facilities and resources. This helps students to gain knowledge and a better understanding of the natural world and their surroundings.

Non-core Subjects

Despite the focus on mathematics, science, and language, we believe that well-rounded students are best-prepared for future education and life. Therefore, at Anglo, we also include subjects belonging to the arts and humanities, as well as computer science. All the non-core offerings in secondary school are focused on preparing students to be global citizens of tomorrow.
