Anglo students achieved more than expected in their bid to succeed on a global platform in the World Scholar’s Cup (WSC) – June 21st to 24th - at Central World, Bangkok. The 2012 global round, held on home soil, saw Siwat Chang (Big) top the honours, securing gold in ‘Current Affairs’, while Beatrice Miu and Jean Thumparkul achieved 4th in the same individual category. Big, Beatrice and Matthias Enrui Thummachai also overcame strong opposition to lift the 2nd place trophy in the ‘Debate’ category and, to top-off an extraordinary weekend of achievement, Matthias finished 4th in the ‘Art’ and ‘Science’ individual categories with Big adding to his gold and silver with a 4th place finish in ‘Literature’.
This was only Anglo’s second year in the junior section of the competition and, after dominating proceedings at the national round in May, there were high-expectations resting on their young shoulders. With the WSC growing in popularity and participation, the competition was going to be much stiffer in 2012, but, determined year-long preparation, effort and resolve saw the students outshine last year’s achievements in Malaysia in true style and gusto.
Again the events were dominated by Singapore and China, but the students proved that despite a comparatively small head-count, Anglo can compete with the world’s best. The future looks bright too, as waiting in Anglo’s wings are a number of precocious Primary 6 students – namely Guy, Zen, Nat, Ann Ann and Bryan – whose continued effort, tireless work-ethic and growing maturity will put them in good stead to go on and repeat or even outdo Anglo’s feat next year.
2013’s global round location has yet to be confirmed, but information and updates can be found on the WSC website at www.scholarscup.org. If you have an avid interest in areas ranging from the latest in nanotechnology developments to the origin of the wheel, you are welcome to sign-up to Anglo’s WSC club next academic year, and you too could find yourself on a challenging journey of success, new-found friendship and knowledge at an exotic destination to boot!
